What is the Sciatic Nerve?
The sciatic nerve is a major nerve that extends from the lower end of the spinal cord down the back of the thigh, and dividing above the knee joint. It is largest diameter nerve in the human body. Sciatic pain refers to pain running down this nerve channel.
Typically, people with sciatica feel the affects on only one side of their body but can also have pain bilaterally. Sciatic pain side effects can make it hard to walk and perform normal daily functions. Some severe cases can even interfere with bladder control.
Sciatic nerve pain generally indicates there is an underlying problem, such as a herniated disc; about 90% of the time sciatica is due to a spinal disc herniation pressing on one of the lumbar or sacral nerve roots pinching the nerve. Sciatica isn’t actually a condition, but rather a term used to describe symptoms that are triggered by compression of the sciatic nerve. If not treated properly, sciatic pain can affect your typical activities throughout the day due to chronic pain and can make it extremely difficult to be comfortable in any position.

Typical Reasons for Sciatic Pain
Herniated and Bulging Discs: Discs act as the bodies natural cushion between the vertebrae of the back and can can “slip” out of position or even burst causing herniation. These discs then will protrude out of the vertebrae and apply pressure on the sciatic nerve causing pain.
Degenerative Disc Disease: Natural aging and breakdown of the spinal discs due to lack of disc rehydration. The discs can begin to lose their natural cushioning ability and the result is pressure on the sciatic nerve. Think of this almost like a car that has old shocks, the less absorption the car has, the more pressure and impact gets put on every other structure.
Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: Irritation of the SI joint which is located at the base of the spinal column can cause sciatica-type pain symptoms.
Obesity: Excess weight on the body can cause improper movement patterns, and extra stress on the lower back resulting in lower back pain.
Spinal Stenosis: Pain in the sciatic may come from the narrowing of the space around the spinal cord. This presses on the sciatic nerve resulting in pain.
Pregnancy: The changes in the body including weight gain, the change in the positioning in the pelvis, hormonal changes and the shift in one's center of gravity can cause sciatic pain.
