Building Y-Mazes

Using Agar, Odor Balancing, & Y-Maze Construction

Agar Preparation

First, we combined 2% agar and boiling water to create a gelatinous solution which would feed the flies. We set the solution in tubes which the flies would live in when they were not being tested.

Odor Preparation

Serial dilutions of MCH and OCT were created with MCH needing much more dilution so there was no preference between each odor.

Y-Maze Construction

The Y-mazes were 3-D printed on two different 3-D printers from this pattern:

The Y-mazes needed to be altered to ensure no flies would escape by creating a tight fit between vials and the lower apparatus. Also, small pipette tips were used at the entry way to either vial to ensure flies would not be able to exit the vial after they made their choice.
