Anouk Govil. Summer is the best time for water activities. For families and groups who are planning on some beach or pool fun, here are a few safety tips worth remembering.

Never go into the water alone

Anouk Govil. Whether young or old, one must never go into the water without the knowledge of another person. For those who want to go for a solo swim, they must ensure that there is a lifeguard nearby. Kids must always be under the supervision of parents. When doing watersports such as surfing, it is best to be with a buddy or an instructor even if a person is already skilled. For those who are into diving, knowing the basic hand signals is very important.

Learn basic swimming skills or use personal flotation devices

Anouk Govil. It takes time to learn how to swim. For those who don't know how to swim yet, it might be helpful to use a flotation device that will keep them safe while they enjoy activities in the water. Floaters, kickboards, life vests, and other devices can greatly help those who are not confident about their skills.

Don't go into the water when sick or intoxicated

Anouk Govil. Going into the pool when sick can worsen the symptoms a person is experiencing as public pools might have already been contaminated. A person can also spread viruses and bacteria by going into a public space such as a pool or the beach. On the other hand, those who are intoxicated shouldn't also go into the water as their senses are dulled. As alcohol affects a person's reactions and judgment, they might not be able to recognize a dangerous situation. To stay safe, one should be in a good physical condition when swimming or doing water sports.
