In its natural environment, the Giant Spear Lily grows on rocky outcrops in wet sclerophyll forest along the ranges that form the Mount Warning caldera

It is one of only two species of plant in the genus Doryanthes and the family Doryanthaceae
Both are endemic to eastern Australia
