J'all Jackdaw was born on the Sunken Coast, but he learned his trade in the wide, lazy rivers that fed into the Verdant Seas. His kin were a small, close-knit family of river traders, known for their sharp wits and even sharper knives. J'all himself was a natural trickster, charming his way out of trouble and into good graces with his endless supply of terrible puns and playful teasing. He often joked that the fastest way to get a good deal was to tell a terrible joke; it disarmed the buyer and made them too dizzy with laughter to haggle properly. His favorite pastime was "borrowing" small trinkets from market stalls and then "returning" them with a new knot tied on a rope or a small pebble placed inside, just to see the confused look on the shopkeeper's face.

But the laughter came to a screeching halt when a brutal band of pirates, led by a fearsome captain, descended on his family's riverboat. They weren't after goods or coin; they were after the trade routes themselves, and they sought to make a terrifying example. J'all, in his typical style, tried to distract them with a string of his worst puns. It didn't work. The monks, seeing a kindred spirit beneath the roguish exterior, offered him not just a place of rest, but a new purpose. They taught him to channel his anger, to see his agility not as a weapon of vengeance but as a tool for justice. J'all chose to join their ranks, no longer just a vigilante but a guardian, using his skills to bring balance to the seas he now calls home.
