Markus Büttiker, rest in peace

Post date: Oct 4, 2013 4:15:27 PM

Dear friends, students, and collaborators of Markus Büttiker,We have the sad duty to inform you of the untimely death of Markus, in the morning of October 4. We know for many of you this news comes as a shock. Markus entered the hospital in the beginning of August, and while his health rapidly declined, he was able to speak and recognize his friends and family until the very end. He is survived by his loving wife, Michele, who spent essentially every waking moment at his side these past two months. As you know, Markus was dearly loved by his colleagues and students, and was a great man. He was an extraordinary scientist who made an incredible impact in many areas of physics. Speaking as his current and former group members, we are all very thankful for the mentoring and devoted attention he gave to us during his life. He was a wonderful teacher and advisor. He inspired many people with his many deep insights into physics, his keen intuition, and his prolific activity. During his last days, he had a long line of visitors, and was able to see his collaborators and family regularly.

With regret,

On behalf of all his present and former group members,

Andrew N. Jordan
