Next Lyceum Event
During the Civil War Alexandria had five military prisons and over 30 Union hospitals. Local historian Madeline Feierstein will present her research from an in-depth look at life for both Confederate and Union prisoners as well as the medical treatment available to jailed soldiers and prisoners of war at hospitals such as Grosvenor Branch, which was the confiscated Lee-Fendall House. Additionally, Madeline will describe how their presence disrupted the daily lives of Alexandria residents. First-hand accounts from individuals who were imprisoned in Alexandria provide insights into their situations throughout the Civil War and into to the beginning of Reconstruction.
Ms Feierstein, as a docent at the Lee-Fendall House Museum, co-founded the museum’s Civil War Research Team and developed the popular Civil War Hospital Tour. Results of her research have been showcased at the Lee-Fendall House as well as the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. As a staff member of Lee-Fendall she leads significant projects documenting the treatment of injured and sick soldiers.
