Bye Bye Birdie is a lively musical comedy set in the late 1950s, inspired by the real-life hysteria surrounding Elvis Presley’s military draft. The story follows rock-and-roll heartthrob Conrad Birdie, whose sudden enlistment sends his teenage fans into a frenzy. To capitalize on his departure, his manager, Albert Peterson, and Albert’s long-suffering secretary and girlfriend, Rosie, devise a publicity stunt: Conrad will give one last kiss to a lucky fan, Kim MacAfee, on The Ed Sullivan Show before heading off to the army.
However, the plan spirals into chaos as Kim’s jealous boyfriend, her disapproving parents, and the star-struck town of Sweet Apple, Ohio, all get caught up in the excitement. Meanwhile, Albert must contend with his overbearing mother while trying to finally win Rosie’s heart. With hit songs like Put On a Happy Face, Kids, and A Lot of Livin’ to Do, Bye Bye Birdie is a fun and energetic tribute to teenage fandom, young love, and the rock-and-roll era.
