This is a design for the home page of a website I am creating about how to use the Scribus Desktop app. I wanted the design to include the Scribus icon and feel reminiscent of the Scribus website.

Design Elements:

  • In my iterations of this design, I tried out several different different text alignments. I chose the right alignmnet to add a sense of movement to my design. The diagonal line created by the left side of the text complements the angle of the pen in addition to drawing attention to the icon.

  • I chose to make the blue square gradient to match the gradient in the icon. Colors were picked from the icon.

  • The gradient and drop shadows help create a lift to the design so it does not feel so flat.

  • Fonts were chosen to reflect the fonts on the Scribus website because I wanted the design and website to feel coherent. The contrast in size helps the viewer distingush between the name of the technology and the subtext.

  • The two colored boxes further emphasize the diagonal feel generated by the pen and the text layout. The overlapping of the boxes creates a pull and sense of connection that brings all of the design elements together.

Photoshop Skills Used:

  • Gradients

  • Drop Shadow

  • Shapes

  • Text Boxes

  • Text Spacing

  • Pen Tool

Revision: Based on feedback I received from peers and my professor, I chose to remove the drop shadows to make items more sharp. To add definition to the "Scribus" text, I used Photoshop's bevel and emboss adjustment. I also chose to replace the boxes with shapes that complemented the contour on the pen. Gradients were used in the shapes to further draw connection to the Scribus icon.
