Floral Wedding Announcement

This graphic was designed with a focus on color. I considered altering the colors of the original flower vectors in order to fit a color scheme I had chosen before beginning the design, but I chose to leave the flowers in their original state. The colors for the background, text, and gold lines were color picked from different flower shades to create cohesion in design.

This design also considers principles of typography, alignment, and hierarchy.

Design Elements:

  • I chose to leave the image centered as I wanted the document to have a more formal, traditional appeal.

  • The orange, blue, and white hues of the flowers work together to create an interesting color scheme that works does not overwhelm the viewer and the text on the page. The colors work together to create a harmonious design while still maintaining interest.

  • A watercolor brush was used to apply some texture and visual interest to the background. Opacity was lowered so the flowers would stand out.

  • Contrasting weights, sizes, and typefaces were used to create a sense of hierarchy in the text element of the design.

Photoshop Skills Used:

  • Brush tool: The brush tool was used to add the watercolor background. A default brush tool was also use to create the geometric shapes and the blue lines around the names.

  • Smart Object: The flowers were copied from and Illustrator file into Photoshop. When pasting into my document, I chose to convert the vector files into smart objects so I could better maintain quality as I was resizing the shape.

  • Type: The type tool was used to add text to the document. Typefaces, line spacing, and text size were altered to fit the tone of the document I was creating.

  • Layers panel: I use the layers panel to order my layers so that they would appear as I wanted them to, to rename my layers, and to create folders so that I could keep my flowers straight. Creating a folder also allowed for an easy duplication of all elements used in on of the flower sections.

  • Color picker: The color picker was used to maintain color consistency within the design.

Revision: I lightened the gold lines and background so that they were not so bold. I also added a specific city and state to the invitation. The revisions were made per recommendations of my peers and professor.
