Dance Magazine Cover

I used this week's assignment as an opportunity to design a magazine cover. A combination of layers, layer masks, and a smoke brush allowed for the smokey effect of the skirt.

Design Elements:

  • Text layout: I chose to right align the text to create a sense of movement on the page that is matched by the appearance of movement from the subject of the photo.

  • Contrasting fonts: As a magazine cover, I want statement fonts that are easily readable. The "Dance" font has a greater weight to it, thus making it the textual focus. The combination of light and heavy strokes in the letters add visual interest and movement to the letters.

  • Color: I chose to leave the model's skirt the striking red as I thought it would make a good focal point. For a background, a blue provides a cool element to an overwhelmingly warm main subject to the design. The blue also contrast, allowing the red to continue to pop out at the viewer. The image with the shade of pink was a color pulled from the ballet slippers. This color also contrasts nicely with the model, but also makes the text seem more prominent on the page.

Revision: I added a drop shadow to the dancer to make her seem less pasted onto the page.
