About Africa's Women's Day Awareness Celebration 2026: Spotlighting Women Securing Africa's Water Future: 6th Edition.
From community boreholes in rural Uganda to continental policy chambers in Addis Ababa, from grassroots WASH advocates in West Africa to water engineers reshaping the Sahel, African women have always been at the heart of water. This year, as we mark the 6th Edition of Africa's Women's Day Awareness, we proudly unveil our theme:
"Spotlighting Women Securing Africa's Water Future: Advancing Sustainable Water and Sanitation for Agenda 2063."
This year's celebration is a powerful tribute to the African women whose leadership, innovation, and lived expertise are securing the continent's most vital resource — water — for generations to come.
Why "Women Securing Africa's Water Future"?
Water is life. Sanitation is dignity. And African women are the guardians of both.
Across the continent, women and girls are the primary collectors, managers, and protectors of water resources. Yet their leadership remains too often invisible in the policy halls and boardrooms where Africa's water future is decided. At the same time, they are disproportionately burdened by the crisis — spending hours each day collecting water, facing health risks from inadequate sanitation, and being excluded from the governance structures that determine how water is allocated and managed.
In February 2026, African Heads of State adopted the Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy — a landmark continental blueprint that, for the first time, inscribes gender equality as a measurable target in a continental water framework. That same year, the United Nations designated "Water and Gender" as the global focus of World Water Day. Rarely do continental and global agendas align so precisely. AWD Awareness 2026 stands at that intersection — and we intend to make it count.
Africa's Women's Day: A Legacy of Recognition.
Africa's Women's Day is observed annually on July 31st, commemorating the founding of the Pan African Women's Organization (PAWO) — the African Union's official agency for gender equality and women's empowerment — at its first conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in 1962. This celebration reflects our commitment to preserving and amplifying the legacy of African women globally, and to advancing their recognition at every level of society — from local water committees to continental summits.
About the Africa's Women's Day Awareness Initiative.
Initiated in 2021 by Joy Wanjiru Machugu-Zenz under AfWITrade, with the support of Abigail Adaeze Chinonyerem Onii Egbunine as Program Manager and other dedicated African men and women volunteers, the Africa's Women's Day Awareness initiative has reached tens of thousands of people globally. With major support from Lumbie Mlambo as Program Advisor and a committed team of volunteers across Africa and the diaspora, the initiative has grown into a vibrant platform dedicated to:
Raising awareness about Africa's Women's Day
Honoring women's leadership across sectors and continents
Connecting AWD programming to continental frameworks like AU Agenda 2063
Creating global spaces for storytelling, recognition, and collective action
Objectives for 2026:
Through technology and global collaboration, we aim to:
Celebrate and spotlight 31 African women whose leadership is securing the continent's water future
Connect AWD Awareness 2026 programming to the targets of the Africa Water Vision 2063
