Hajer Sharief

Hajer Sharief,

(Co-Founder Together We Build It)

Hajer Sharief is the co-founder of the “Together We Build it” NGO in Libya and an Extremely Together Young Leader of the Kofi Annan Foundation. With her organisation, Hajer advocates for women’s and youth inclusion in peace in Libya.

When it comes to taking part in peacemaking, young women often face the ‘double burden’ of being both young and women. Overcoming this is key to increasing the chances of sustainable peace, says Libyan Hajer Sharief.

'Together We Build It’ aims to strengthen the role of women and youth in building peace in Libya. Sharief talked to CMI on the occasion of our International Women’s Day campaign to promote the role of young women in peacemaking.

In Finland, Sharief participated in the First International Symposium on Youth Participation in Peace Processes, organised by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the UN together with civil society representatives.

In 2013, she co-initiated the 1325 Network in Libya, a network of civil society organisations encouraging women to play an active role in peace-building and conflict prevention. As part of the Kofi Annan Foundation's Extremely Together initiative, she also helped design the first ever youth-led countering violent extremism toolkit. Hajer was a member of the UN Advisory Group of Experts for the Progress Study on Youth, Peace and Security.

Hajer Sharief encourages women to stand up against violence in Libya. She is also a UN Women Champion on Women, Peace, Security and Human Rights
