We are transitioning from our traditional "flat" preconnected hose load to the "triple" or "S" hose load for our preconnects. The selling point for this hose load is that it is designed for a one-firefighter stretch without the need to flake out the line. Deployed correctly, it should be kink free and can be ready for water once the full hose load is off of the truck. Since the hose is packed and comes off in three layers, it should take less than 1/3 of the distance on the initial pull by the firefighter.
We will be training on both loading and deploying this new load in the coming weeks. Below is a collection of videos showing how to create this load and multiple ways the load can be deployed other that a straight pull.
As with most things in the fire service, the triple load is not a silver bullet or cure-all for everything but rather another option that can be used to make our department more effective on the fireground given the challenges we face.Â
