The Akron Saberjet is a very unique nozzle that found its way into our department. Why is a matter of debate but it is immaterial. What is important to understand is that it is 2 different nozzles in one package that require understanding to operate. Also important is to know it's bore size.
First, we have the single shutoff version. There is a different model that has 2 different shutoffs...that's not these.
Next the bale is not your typical open/close on/off bale. In the half way position you will be flowing a fog pattern. The nozzle is configured to function at 100psi and flow 135gpm in this mode. There is NO STRAIGHT STREAM available in this mode, only a narrower fog. In the full open position, the nozzle is in smooth bore mode. As with all smooth bores, it is meant to be pumped to 50psi. Obviously since the two modes require a different pressure at the tip, communication with the engineer is essential.
Lastly, most of our nozzles are 1" tips (some 15/16"). It is recommended that the bore be no more than 1/2 of the diameter of the line it is on so with 1.75" line, that means the tip size should be 7/8". As the tip size increases, the back pressure decreases meaning the hose will be less rigid. Adding in the newer, lighter hose amplifies the affect and kinking is much more likely. Presently, the only way to avoid this is to overpump the line causing much higher nozzle reaction and increasing firefighter fatigue.
