"Implementing site-selectivity in hydrogen atom transfer based C(sp3)-H bond oxygenations"
Massimo Bietti obtained his PhD in chemistry in 1995 at the Università di Roma “La Sapienza”, under the supervision of Enrico Baciocchi, working on the reactivity of aromatic radical cations. He carried out postdoctoral work at the Max Planck Institut für Strahlenchemie (Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany), under the supervision of Steen Steenken, studying the role of structural and medium effects on the reactivity of alkylaromatic radical cations and alkoxyl radicals generated by pulse radiolysis and laser flash photolysis. He then joined the Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Chimiche of the Università di Roma “Tor Vergata” in 1996, where he became Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry in 2002 and Full Professor in 2019. In 2010-2011 he has been a visiting Professor in the research group of Nicholas J. Turro at the Department of Chemistry, Columbia University (New York, USA). His scientific activity has been focused on the role of reactive intermediates such as radical ions and free radicals in organic processes and on the kinetic study of electron transfer and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions of these species by means of time resolved techniques. Current interest is mostly devoted to the study of HAT based C(sp3)H bond functionalization reactions promoted by oxygen centered radicals, metal-oxo species and dioxiranes, dealing in particular with the role of structural and medium effects on site and stereoselectivity. The results of these studies have led to 119 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, 3 book chapters and more than 60 communications and seminars at conferences, meetings and academic institutions.
