Laying on the edge of Southend and Benfleet salt marshes sits an art work 'Graveyard of Lost Species' a collaboration between YoHa and Critical Art Ensemble and commissioned by Arts Catalyst. 'The art work records and acknowledges wildlife, marine creatures, microbes, people, livelihoods, fishing methods, landmarks, mythologies and local dialects.'
The Lost Things audio work is a response to the boat laying in the marsh. The recording point was East about 80ft from the boat and left to record 30min of ambient sound. This included wind, birds, planes, distant dogs and trains. The day was grey, clouds lowered to the river, bright lichen, marsh grass yet to bloom and revive into spring colour, underneath it all mud.
