Acoustic Landscapes

Tom Scott

In 2010 an audio work was recorded over a number of weeks at Walthamstow Marshes named North, South, East and West, furthermore Super 8 time-lapse footage was shot on location at the bird sanctuary, located opposite the lighthouse on St Mary's Island, North Tyneside, called Postcard View, St Mary’s.

These two works represent two geographic end points, encompassing my experience of the East coast and came to encompass an ongoing research project concerned with the acoustic and at times the visual landscape of the East coast of England.

North, South, East and West was presented as part of a Waltham Forest Arts group show Oh I do like to be beside.... at the Waterworks, Lee Bridge Road, Waltham Forest, June 2011, later that year both works were presented at the Rivermead Gallery, Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford. 8th November to 12th December 2010. This show was named EXQUISITE LANDSCAPES after Alan Thornton's pastel drawings also part of the show. The following year Postcard View, St Mary’s was presented at the 5th Cambridge Super 8 Festival, 28th April - 1st May 2011. A reworked version of Postcard View, St Mary’s was presented in the "Flicker: Artists and Super 8" at Smiths Row, Bury St Edmunds in January - March 2013, during May 2013, The Makers Yard, London exhibited both works together.
