Super 8 Noise was produced for the Desire Lines, the second event of this type, organised by Adam Kinsey. See right for further information.

Super 8 Noise production method was to project Super 8 footage onto a light sensor, the output was put through a noise generator, depending on the projectors position from the sensor and speed of the projector it was possible for different types of noise to be produced.

Sometimes its possible to smell the oil of the projector, this was mapped to the sounds of an oil heater, these were recorded and incorporated into the mix.

Tony Scott contributed recordings of other types of Super 8 projectors using contact mics. Duration 10min.

Initial design for Super 8 Noise. Actually mic 1 and Audiomulch weren't used for this implementation.

Further Development: The intention is to create a Super 8 performance work with multiple projectors, scratch Super 8 film and finer resolution light sensors and multiple noise generators.

BellArtlabs does "The Super 8 Noise Band"!!

Desire Lines is an event that promotes Sound Art and Improvised Sound.

The brief is to develop a pre recorded Sound Art work specifically for a group of improvising musicians to play with. The works produced will be around 10 minutes long.

The intention is that the work will be used as part of a free live performance with a group of improvising musicians.

A group of musicians, who have not previously heard the work, will be left with the challenge of responding to and engaging with your composition in real time.

The brief is left open to your interpretation of what will create an engaging or challenging sonic event. The works could include electronics, field recording, spoken word, shifting rhythms, layered sounds or dynamic shifts. You may seek to engage with or challenge the musicians. It may be spacious or an unsympathetic wall of abrasive noise. It may be none of the above.

The musicians will primarily be drawn from the Mopomoso Workshop group. This is a Free Improvisation Workshop group with a rotating membership. The instrumentation on the day will likely include Saxophones, Clarinet's, Guitar, Voice, Percussion and Electronics. The combination of instruments which will accompany your work will not be decided until the day. Your work will likely be accompanied by a duo or trio of live musicians.
