Standard 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy – The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
The above screencastify (I was not able to embed it) is a video of me showing some resources I learned that incorporate art with physical education. It was part of one of my classes during the pandemic so had to share it through video.
Standard 9N states the teacher "collaborates with other teachers, students, parents or guardians, specialists, administrators, and community partners to enhance student’s learning and school improvement", The resources I found through collaboration with other art teachers, is an opportunity for the physical education department to grow and expand into different avenues. Not only do I go through ideas, but there are workshops and professional development opportunities.
This is an important part of my job as a teacher. I need to grow and educate myself every year. Finding new and creative ways to teach physical education will only help promote its importance of it and help make it a staple in all institutions.
Above is an assignment in which I take a leadership role and present my idea for a weightlifting club. Included is why it is beneficial to the school community, how it will be financed and how I intend to run it.
Standard 9F states the teacher "understands the roles of an advocate, the process of advocacy, and its place in combating or promoting certain school district practices affecting students". In this assignment, I play the role of advocate for my students who really enjoy powerlifting and want to start a club and compete with other schools if possible.
This really helped me gain perspective on what it means to be a leader and sponsor. I understand how important it is to get community involvement, parental involvement, and student interest. All parts of the school community are important in creating an effective and engaging school culture.
