Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Above is an assignment I used while student teaching. It asks students to create a workout routine for 1 week that incorporates a majority of the body's functional movements and major muscle groups.
Standard 6; 6I states the teacher "knows appropriate and varied instructional approaches, including those that develop word knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and strategy use in the content areas". This assignment allows students to demonstrate their knowledge in physical fitness, exercise, body parts, and how to effectively exercise them. It allows students to show they have the necessary vocabulary, comprehension, and strategy as it relates to physical fitness content.
This is a very effective way to see if students are comprehending the content or simply following along with what I tell them. It gives me an opportunity to see the effectiveness of my teaching and allows students to take a control of their own learning.
The above is a prompt I used while student teaching. Each student is to share a little bit about themselves while also giving their definition of physical fitness and any goals they are comfortable sharing with their peers.
Standard 6; 6S states the teacher "stimulates discussion in the content areas for varied instructional and conversational purposes". I feel like this assignment can fit into many categories but I like this here because it allows students to get comfortable with each other and open discussion about physical fitness while having an understanding of who we are as individuals.
This has helped me facilitate an open, inviting, and comfortable learning environment. Students learn about their peers while I can incorporate physical fitness content in a more comfortable and open setting engaging in more dialogue and relationship building.
