Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
Technology in Education has grown substantially over the years and has almost become a norm in the classroom. By using technology you significantly promote "critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning" from Standard 5 in the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards. The critical and creative thinking is My Technology in Education class has provided me with a large variety of methods to present educational material.
This is an example exit slip I would use for my strength and conditioning/weight lifting classes. It is an opportunity for students to share any difficulties with me as well as show if they are understanding the concepts I am teaching them.
Standard 5; 5F states the teacher "knows strategies to maximize student attentiveness and engagement". This exit slip allows for student engagement and participation. It gives students a chance to have ownership of their learning and engage in self-reflection.
This helps me keep the learning environment fresh and effective. Understanding where each student is as an individual will give me what I need to make sure my classroom is engaging and challenging enough for student growth.
Technology to enhance learning and physical fitness
While student teaching at the high school we used heart rate monitors and an app called teambuildr. The heart rate monitor showed real-time where students' heart rate was and what zone they were at any given time during class. The teambuildr app is a place where students can put in their weights for lifts and I can create workouts based on those numbers for whatever goal we might have (hypertrophy, weight loss, etc.)
Standard 5; 5G states the teacher "knows how to evaluate and use student performance data to adjust instruction while teaching". These tools allow me to show real-time where students are in their performance. Some students may not be working hard enough, some students may be so advanced they need more intense workouts. There is a lot to do with the data.
These apps are extremely effective in my assessment and instruction of students. With so many different individuals in a classroom and only my set of eyes most of the time, technology like this can really assist me in getting the most out of my students.
