Standard 1: Teaching Diverse Students

I have attached two papers relating to orthopedic impairment and how they relate to a physical education class. The papers describe certain impairments and their causes. They describe teaching strategies, accommodations and modifications to lesson plans I would need to implement in class. I have also included a power point presentation regarding teaching strategies, accommodations and modifications.

The work above has helped me gain the knowledge and resources I need for teaching a diverse student population and adhere to the Illinois State Standard 1: Teaching Diverse Students. Specifically Illinois State Standard 1D: understands the impact of cognitive, emotional, physical, and sensory disabilities on learning and communication pursuant to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (also referred to as “IDEA”) (20 USC 1400 et seq.), its implementing regulations (34 CFR 300; 2006), Article 14 of the School Code [105 ILCS 5/Art.14] and 23 Ill. Adm. Code 226 (Special Education). The work I provided above is only a sample of the different disabilities I have explored through my educational career. Again, by gaining the knowledge and resources by completing these artifacts, I can provide students with a solid, safe and inclusive classroom experience.

I feel much better and prepared after taking the course work for AEDU 216. I have received useful resources on the many different disabilities I may encounter as a teacher. I now have background knowledge and the ability to dig deeper utilizing these resources when I encounter an individual or individual with disabilities. I look forward to incorporating what I have learned in and adaptive P.E. class.
