May Day

The crowning of the “Queen of May” was an element of May Day, a Simmons tradition which began in 1912. During the celebration, the President of the Senior Class was crowned, and she and her court were entertained by the sophomore class as they danced around the May Pole and performed a skit. These festivities served as a bonding activity between the classes, particularly the sophomores and the seniors. In the 1970s, the crowning of the Queen of May was discontinued, though other aspects of May Day remained in the following decades.
