May Day
May Day, a Simmons tradition which began in 1912, consists of various festivities such as the maypole dance. As a bonding activity between the classes, members of the sophomore class originally danced around the maypole as entertainment for the senior “Queen of May” and her court. May Day festivities evolved over the years, with the Modern Dance club assuming the maypole performance in the late 1950s. Today, the maypole dance is performed by the Simmons University Dance Company, making it the longest running tradition at the institution.
