DESTINATIONS UNKNOWN - SEPTEMBER 17, 2022
Our Destinations Unknown Day was a huge success! How do I know this? One girl told my co-leader, “This is like school, but fun!” Girl Scout Troop 30197 gathered at 8:30 am for a day of unknown adventures! First up, learning about Braille and how to read messages written in Braille. The girls had to decipher messages and then had the opportunity to write their own. They also quickly found out that this skill would be needed throughout the day! After each activity, the girls had to solve a riddle to find out where we were going next. If they couldn’t figure it out, they opened the envelope where, you guessed it, the answer was written in Braille!
Highlights of the day included designing a piece of circle art with items found in nature, finding out how old trees are, measuring the height of a flagpole by using shadows and not climbing it, taking lots of pictures, determining the shapes of fingerprints, using handwriting analysis to determine who wrote a note and forgot to sign her name, buying and planting bulbs, putting together and setting up a rain gauge/thermometer at the Hut, and of course, seeing pictures of themselves that had been edited!
The day ended around 5 PM and thanks to completing some requirements prior to this event, the girls had earned many badges and patches including the Junior Detective badge, Numbers in Nature (Brownie and Junior levels), Shapes in Nature (Brownie and Junior levels), a nature fun patch, the 110th Anniversary patch, the Junior Photography badge, the Swaps patch, the Artistry Trading Cards patch and an I know my promise/law patch.
WEBB FIRST LOOK WITH NASA (WEBB TELESCOPE) - AUGUST 27, 2022
Girls from around GSHG took a first look at the Webb Telescope.
Heat Shield: Can you build a heat shield so that the Hershey Kiss inside the cup will not melt when put under the hair dryer for 3-5 minutes?
Sky Rocket: Make a skyrocket. Measure how far it flies. Can you make adjustments to make it go further? Which do you think will go further --- cardstock or regular paper?
Webb Mirror: Using scratch paper and gold cardstock, design your own Webb Mirror!
ADULT RECOGNITION - AUGUST 20, 2022
The Girl Scouts Newcomer Award recognizes volunteers who have served in a position new to them for at least one year but less than two years and fulfill the duties of that position in an exceptional manner. On the morning of August 20, 2022, at the Effingham Service Unit Girl Scout meeting Mrs. Brandy was honored with this award.
Her nominators praised her for being super willing to learn everything there is to learn about Girl Scouts and running a troop and her willingness to go to trainings so that we have the adults with needed certifications. She was praised for offering and providing transportation on more than one occasion so that girls do not miss Girl Scout experiences due to a lack of transportation. She is always a phone call away for any parent who needs assistance and has helped more than one parent complete paperwork, figure out technical issues with doing things online, and being a needed friend to the girls’ moms. Brandy loves the girls as if they are her own and wants the best for each of them.
Then that afternoon, Brandy was recognized at our troop meeting where the girls also received word of her recognition. Thank you Mrs. Brandy for all you do for our girls.
GSHG 110TH ANNIVERSARY COUNCIL SERVICE PROJECT
In keeping with the theme of service to others, GSHG is undertaking a council-wide service project in celebration of our 110th anniversary. We would like for every Girl Scout, alumnae, family and friend to help.
We know that many of our communities are experiencing significant upticks in the local homeless population. While we cannot solve the problem in a year, we can do something to help. We are proposing to assemble 110 hygiene kits for each of the 125 counties in our jurisdiction. That’s 13,750 hygiene kits!
We really need your help to achieve this audacious goal by March 12, 2023. Can we do it?
When the girls heard this news, they got to work to do their part. Many thanks to Mrs. April, Mrs. Brandy, Mr. Eric, Mr. Justin, Ms. Karen, Mrs. Kim, Mrs. Lana, Mrs. Stefanie, Mrs. Tammy, Mrs. Wendy, and all those named ANONYMOUS!
On July 16, 2022, girls went shopping to buy items for hygiene kits. The girls have a goal of donating 60 hygiene kits to People Helping People. They are joining GSHG's 110th Anniversary Council Service Project of donating hygiene kits to the homeless.
On August 20, the girls met to pack 60 Hygiene Kits. We appreciate Mrs. Amber coming to talk with the girls. She explained how these kits will benefit those served through People Helping People as well as giving them information on other opportunities of service. We want to thank everyone who helped in any way with our 110th Anniversary Council Service Project!
