May 25th - 29th

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all well and have survived another week of home-learning. Nearly everyone now has all their schoolbooks and copies at home so hopefully, this will make things a little easier.

We received lots of great work this week, which we really enjoyed seeing. Keep sending work or just hellos to us at 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie

As always, don't forget the RTÉ Home School Hub each day at 11am, the TG4 Cúla4 ar Scoil each day at 10am and start the day off at 9am with PE with Joe.

As always, take care and stay safe,

Mr Lyons, Ms O'Reilly, Ms McLean and Ms Peyton

Maths

This week, as we now have our Mathemagic books at home, we're going to look at Money. We'll be focusing on Chapter 30 on pages 139 to 144. Some of this chapter will be revision from what you covered in 2nd class, while a lot of the new material we have covered through your Mental Maths work and work on decimals. But there are some small parts that are new. Therefore, we ask you to go through and try these games/videos below first before starting on your book work if possible. The games will revise work done already and the two videos will help with addition and subtraction of money.

Also included are last weeks answers to the fractions work.

Reading Zone Work - We have actually finished our Reading Zone books. If you have missed any stories, please feel free to go back over them and their activities if you wish. However, this week we have included a short reading comprehension activity from CJ Fallons' Way With Words 3 from pages 44 and 45. Please read the short story and complete the exercises on page 45. Online version available here.

Writing - We have been amazed at the great stories, diaries and recounts that have come our way in the last few weeks. We have so many budding authors in 3rd Class!

This week we are again looking at a competition. Fighting Words, who we wrote our lighthouse stories for, have teamed up with Lidl to launch a very nice competition. Win a creative writing masterclass with legendary Irish writer, Roddy Doyle and the Fighting Words centre along with a €250 Lidl voucher! Simply write a short story and begin with the line "One day in Lidl...". There are 2 age groups (5-9 years and 10-14 years) so we fall in between the two.

Pick up your entry form in stores and follow the instructions to submit your entry before the end of May. We would also love to see your stories so if you can, send them to us at 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie

Remember to us ISPACE openers, really descriptive language and your 5 senses!

More information on competition can be found here.

Reading - We have heard about some amazing reading going on all around Virginia and beyond. Keep reading and tell us about the books you're reading.

Gaeilge

An tseachtain seo caite, d'fhéachamar ar an scéal faoin seomra codlata nua. Ba mhaith linn féach air arís agus lena leabhair Abair Liom sa bhaile anois, déanfaimid iarracht na gníomhaíochtaí scríofa a dhéanamh. Ansin, féach ar an bpictiúr seo faoina seomraí codlata arís agus deán iarracht é a úsáid chun labhairt i nGaeilge faoi na rudaí atá ar siúl.

Last week, we looked at the story about a new bedroom. We'd like to look at it again and now with the Abair Liom books at home, we'll try to do some written activities. So, look at the pictures about the bedrooms again and try to speak in Irish about what's going on.

Cá bhfuil Seán agus Síofra? Where are Seán and Síofra?

Cad atá siad ag déanamh? What are they doing?

Cad a fheiceann tú sa phictiúr? What do you see in the picture?

Cá bhfuil clog/ríomhaire/postaer/cuid eadaí/leabhair/bróga srl. Síofra? Where is Síofra's clock/computer/clothes/books/shoes etc?

Cá bhfuil liathróid/lampa/stocaí/mála scoile/bríste srl. Seán? Where is Seán's ball/lamp/socks/school bag/trousers etc?

faoin - under the ar an - on the san - in the in aice leis an - beside the

Ansin, féach ar leathanach 40 agus 41. Leigh an ríomhphost agus an cómhrá. Usáid an banc focal thios. Tar éís sin, déan iarracht freagair na ceisteanna ar 40 agus na habairtí a scríobh ar 41.

Then look at page 40 and 41. Read the email and the conversation. Use the word bank below. After that, try to answer the questions on page 40 and write the sentences on page 41.

Haigh - Hi ar fheabhas - brilliant chroch mo Dhaidí - My Daddy hung eadaí leapa deasa - nice pyjamas/bed clothes

buíochas le Dia - Thanks be to God boladh uafásach - awful smell cad tá cearr? - What's wrong?

Don't forget about our Rainbow Moments survey. Our whole school are taking part in a 'Weaving Well-Being' Rainbow Moments survey. Please take the time to do this survey with your child. A lot of the survey is funny/silly questions but just promotes positive thoughts.

Please complete the survey by clicking here.

Have fun with it!

SESE

Since we have our Window on the World books at home now, we'd love you to use your Geography book to study a contrasting part of Ireland to Cavan. Galway is coastal county, has a large city, but also has mountainous and deserted land to the west.

Read through Chapter 10 on page 60 all about Galway. Then try some of exercises on pages 63, 64 and 65.

We'd especially like you to do a little research project on Galway, maybe including a postcard of Galway you make, information on the city (it's different areas, islands, rivers, lakes etc.), and any other research you do on the county.

Remember to send pictures of your project to 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie

Music

Continuing with the theme of Galway, we have attached the video to Cailín na Gaillimhe and the lyrics to the song. Have a listen and try to sing along with the words.
