April 20th - 24th

Hello everyone,

We hope you're still keeping well and had an enjoyable Easter - or as enjoyable as possible at the minute. We miss you all and hope you're staying safe.

We're posting more activities here to keep you busy. It's all revision work and some continuation of regular homework/reading activities.

We can't stress enough to parents/guardians that this is a menu of work for your child and we really don't expect children to complete every task set below. Also, in school, every child's tasks are differentiated through levels of teacher support, help and introductions, so please do not become stressed about any work your child is finding difficult. Help where you can and if causing stress, skip it and move on.

There are a couple of sheets in the resources but don't worry if you can't print out. Just use the sheets as guides and make your own based on them.

If there are concerns/problems, you can email us and we will endeavour to reply as soon as we can. We would also like to see some of the children's work, and if parents give permission, we may post some samples of work here or on the school website. We can be contacted by email at 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie

Keep safe,

Mr Lyons, Ms O'Reilly, Ms McLean and Ms Peyton

English

Reading Zone - Unit 27 - Click on the pages below to bring up images of the pages of Unit 27. Read the story and complete activities in your copy. If you would like to use the online textbook for Reading Zone, it can be found on the Folens site. Instructions on accessing textbooks can be found here.

Grammar - We've done lots of work on using capital letters this year. Use the punctuation slides below to help remind you when to use them and then try to complete the capital letters activity in your copy by clicking the capital letters page picture below. This activity is taken from CJ Fallon's A Way With Words 3 page 30. To access the online textbook, follow instructions here.

Writing - We'd love you to write a script for a news/weather report as if you were appearing on RTÉ. It can be about absolutely anything - a game you played, something that happened in your house, the weather, a family dinner/event - ANYTHING. Remember to try and write as if you're speaking on television.

Oral Language/Drama - Use the script you've written above and act out your report. Be creative! if possible, have siblings/parents/guardians watch you or even video you. Have fun...

Reading - Keep up your reading. We've picked 3 of our favourite Roald Dahl books and put them below too. Try and do a book review on any books you read. We've attached a sample template but you don't need to use this. You could just use it for ideas.

Maths

We're trying to focus on revising time this week. We know this is always a tricky topic and again we don't want to cause stress. So pick the activities that suit your child and don't worry if he/she is struggling with some of the activities.

Making a Clock - The best way to practise telling the time is by using a clock. In school, we have clocks for you but you probably don't at home. Make a clock at home that you can practise with. This is a good guide on how to make one. If you don't have split pins at home, try an thumb tack or just have hands that are not stuck to the clock. When you're finished, practise calling out times and using the clock to show the correct time.

Time Book Work - We are attaching pages below from Busy at Maths 3. We have completed the corresponding work in our Mathemagic books so this work is similar to that we have already done. Again, this is a menu and we don't expect it all to be done. Like above, click on the pages for an image of the page or use the onine version of Busy at Maths 3 pg 92-96 on the CJ Fallon website. Instructions again here. We have also included slides to help you - one about the analogue clock and one about digital time.

Digital Time

Mental Maths - Please also continue with your Mental Maths books a with Week 28, pages 87 to 89.

A sample digital book can be found here when clicking 'Preview Book': https://www.prim-ed.ie/shop/new-wave-mental-maths-3rd-class/

Times Tables - Please continue to practise your times tables 0-12 with your tables book or using games. Hit the Button (below) is still our favouite online way to practise.

Gaeilge

Déan iarracht an pictiúr seo a úsáid chun labhairt i nGaeilge faoi na rudaí atá ar siúl. Rinneamar é seo ar scoil roimh an dúnadh. Úsáid na ceistenna sin chun comhrá a spreagadh:

Try to speak in Irish about what's going on in the picture. We have already done this in school before. Use these questions to start conversation.

Cá bhfuil an clann? Where are the family?

Cad a fheiceann tú sa phictiúr? What do you see in the picture?

Conas atá Síofra/Mamaí/Oisín/Seán/an freastalaí? How is Síofra/Mamaí/Oisín/Seán/the attendant?

Cén fáth atá fearg/brón/leadrán/eagla ar Síofra/Mamaí/Oisín/Seán/an freastalaí meas tú? Why is Síofra/Mamaí/Oisín/Seán/the attendant angry/bored/scared do you think?

Cad atá Síofra/Mamaí/Oisín/Seán/an freastalaí ag caitheamh? What is Síofra/Mamaí/Oisín/Seán/the attendant wearing?

Cén eadaí eile a fheiceann tú san siopa? What other clothes do you see in the shop?

Cluichí - Déan iarracht cluichí mar 'Deir Ó'Grádaigh', 'Feicim le mo shúilín bheag' agus 'Leadóg focail' a imirt freisin.

SESE

Time Capsule - This is a very unusual time in our lives and a time we'll never forget. But we will forget details about ourselves at this time in the future. So we would like you to make your own Covid 19 2020 Time Capsule. This will include lots of information about you, your family, this time, a letter to your future self and perhaps some special items (art, bracelet, photos etc.)

We've again included a guide below. You can either print this or use it for ideas to create your own sheets.

When you're finished, keep in an old shoe/cereal box and ask your parents to store it away somewhere safe - and return to it in years to come!

Non-Screen Time Activities - We have a little choice board for you to choose some things to do at this time that doesn't involve technology or screens. Pick some of these activities when you need a break or are bored. Enjoy!

PE

To finish, we would like you stay active too. We hadn't covered dance this year in PE apart from the Irish dancing in the last week of school. So we would like you to try and take on the TikTok challenge for dancing to the song, 'Blinding Lights'.

If you haven't seen the challenge, here are some examples:

It's difficult to stay in time with the song but this video below slows everything down and shows you exactly how to do the moves. Try your best. We'd love to see the end result whenever we get back to school. Stay safe!

RTÉ/Cúla4 Homeschool Hubs

Both RTÉ and TG4 are showing fantastic homeschool programming each day this week. Cúla 4 Ar Scoil shows each day at 10am on TG4. RTÉ Home School Hub shows directly afterwards on RTÉ 2 at 11am. These are the timetables for these programmes this week. Try ti tune in.
