May 11th - 15th

Hello again everyone,

It was great to hear from lots of children/parents/guardians this week. We really want to hear from everybody every week. That can be a short message just to say hi or a detailed email/letter describing everything you've been doing with pictures/videos. It's up to you and your parents. But please try to make contact with your teacher at least once per week at 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie

Some amazing work has come to us this week. Keep them coming. It's so nice to see you trying the activities at home and producing fantastic work.

Stay safe,

Mr Lyons, Ms O'Reilly, Ms McLean and Ms Peyton

Maths

Book Work - Continuing on from decimals last week, we wanted to recap on fractions this week. Again, we've used the corresponding chapters in CJ Fallon's Busy at Maths 3 to those we have done in Mathemagic. There are excellent video tutorials/games based on the pages below too so we've posted links to these. These are great to refresh your memory about how to do the questions on the page.

We have also included the answer page to last week's Decimals chapter work below too.

Mental Maths - Please also continue with your Mental Maths books with Week 31, pages 92 to 94 in actual book or pages 96-98 online.

A sample digital book can be found here when clicking 'Preview Book': https://www.prim-ed.ie/shop/new-wave-mental-maths-3rd-class/

We have attached the answers for Week 30 below. Click each to enlarge.

Reading Zone - We are going back to Reading Zone this week and would like you to look at a flyer for a toy shop. Read through the flyer and then complete the activities on pages 122 and 123 in your copy.

Grammar Work - We'd like you to take a look at silent letters this week. There are some slides with rules about where silent letters go below. Have a look through it and think of any other words you know with silent letters. Then try to complete the work in Way with Words 3 page 76 in your copy. This activity is taken from CJ Fallon's A Way With Words 3 page 56. To access the online textbook, follow instructions here.

Writing - We've had some amazing writing sent to us over the last two weeks. It has been excellent with brilliant description and we think it's been so good, that our classes are some of the best writers around. So, why not show this off some more.

Fighting Words is an organisation founded with the help of Roddy Doyle to help young writers. It has partnered with Great Lighthouses to launch a writing competition called "Become a Young Storykeeper" that is best explained in the video below.

Your task is to write a story about a lighthouse. It doesn't have to be all about a lighthouse but must mention it somewhere in your story. Remember, to include lots and lots of description, especially about characters and the setting. Lots more information and how to enter the competition can be found on the Fighting Words website as well as tips for writing.

It may not be for you but this video may give you an idea or two. Or it could help you when you are describing the setting.

Generic-Reading-Questions-Fiction

Reading/Drama - As usual, we would like you to continue reading. We've heard about some great books being read by lots of students. Now we'd like to hear more about the actual books. We'd love if you could do an interview reviewing a book you've read during the lockdown. This could be done with a parent/guardian/sibling etc. If possible, you could video the interview too. Have fun with it. To help you, these are some questions you could use in your interview.

Gaeilge

Abair Liom - Féach ar an bpictiúr seo faoin Ionad Siopadóireachta arís. Ansin, deán iarracht é a úsáid chun labhairt i nGaeilge faoi na rudaí atá ar siúl. Mar roimhe, rinneamar é seo ar scoil an bhlian sin. Úsáid na ceistenna sin chun comhrá a spreagadh:

Look at this picture about the Shopping Centre. Then, try to speak in Irish about what's going on. As before, we did this in school this year. Use these questions to help with the conversation:

Cá bhfuil gach duine? Where is everybody?

Cad atá ar siúl? What's going on?

Cad a fheiceann tú sa phictiúr? What do you see in the picture?

Cad atá Síofra/Mamó/Daidí/Oisín/Mamaí/Dadó/Seán ag deanamh? What are Síofra/Mamó/Daidí/Oisín/Mamaí/Dadó/Seán doing?

Cén sórt leabhar atá Mamó ag ceannach measann tú? What type of book is Mamó buying do you think?

Cad atá Dadó ag ceannach measann tú? What is Dadó buying do you think?

Cén dath ar na spéaclaí atá Oisín ag piocadh? What colour are the glasses Oisín's picking?

Am don Léamh - Leigh an scéal seo faoin Iasc Órga. Ansin, déan iarracht na cleachtaí ar an dara leathanach a dheanamh ó bhéal.

Read the story about the Goldfish. Then, try to do the exercises on the second page orally.

SESE

Like the writing competition above, we'd like you to learn more about lighthouses. We have attached slides below about how lighthouses work, their history and where they're generally located. But we like you to research a little more, especially about Irish lighthouses. Where are they? How old are they? Are there still lighthouse keepers living in them? Are the still operating?

We would then like you to create a poster showing off your research and some things you may have learned in the slides. The poster should have both writing and pictures.

Art

After one of our students made their own lighthouse last week using an old traffic cone, you could try to make your own lighthouse too. You could use old toilet rolls, cardboard or just paper to make yours. Try to make it colourful and bright.

If you don't have any materials at hand to make a lighthouse, try out these cool hand animals. All you need is your hand, a pencil and some colours.

PE

It was great to hear that some of you are doing Joe Wicks' PE each morning. It is available on YouTube and goes live at 9am each morning from Monday to Friday. But if that time doesn't suit, you can always come back later in the day and do them whenever suits you and your family. They are great exercise sessions that will make you really fit and healthy. Try them out here!

But as a challenge this week, we want you to try this exercise challenge set by Brian O'Driscoll last Thursday. Try to do a wall hold as shown in the video, and try to stay in the hold for as long as possible. Try each day and see can you improve your time.
