Positivity Poster

We’ve been so impressed with our pupils’ positivity and resilience during this challenging time. To celebrate this, we’re asking all our pupils to create a ‘Poster of Positivity’. As always, this is just a suggested activity but we’d love to get as many entries as possible as the final product would make a lovely end-of-year keepsake.

Your poster could contain a positive message, slogan or quote and a picture to go with it – something that makes you smile. It could contain drawings of things, activities or people that have brought you happiness during this time. We’ve included some sample slogans you could use below but feel free to make up your own of course! Be as creative as you’d like.

Please send us a photo or scan of the poster to 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie by Friday 19th June. Every class will be putting their posters together to make one big collage of positivity that truly represents how strong and adaptable our fantastic pupils are! We look forward to seeing your entries.

Sample slogans and quotes for your poster:

  • Keep smiling!

  • Keep calm and carry on.

  • Difficult roads often lead to beautiful places.

  • “Don’t let what you can’t do stop you from doing what you can do.” – John Wooden

  • “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” – Theodore Roosevelt

  • "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning how to dance in the rain." – Vivian Greene

June 8th - 12th - Big Virtual School Tour

Hi everybody,

We're only 2 and a half weeks away from the end of the school year and the end of 3rd class! WOW!

This Tuesday, 9th June, was supposed to be our school tour day to Tanagh. But instead, we're going to do a HUGE virtual school tour with lots of activities. Some of you mentioned you enjoyed last week's to Egypt but this week, we think you'll like a lot more and we've so many great activities to try too. You can do the activities and tour on any day of course. And as always, the tasks are just a suggestion and use them as a menu.

We're not going to tell you where we're going yet but we are going on a virtual plane. So you'll need this:

Any ideas where we're going yet? The country is pretty obvious now... but what about the city??? Or what are we going to do there??

Keep following the trip below and complete some activities based on the trip. We've also left some activities in your Mathemagic and Mental Maths books below. We're also continuing with our virtual sports day so check it out and complete the challenges too. Keep in touch with us as always at 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie

Let us know how you're doing and keep sending in any work you complete.

Keep safe and let the journey and school tour begin.

Mr Lyons, Ms O'Reilly, Ms McLean and Ms Peyton

Dublin Airport

So we've arrived at Dublin Airport. We're only doing a day trip so no need to check in luggage. Do you know where we're going yet? Time to board the plane. Who are you sitting beside? What games could you play on the plane? Will you watch a movie? Time for take-off...

We've arrived... but where???

The captain has just announced "Welcome to San Diego, where the weather is hot with temperatures at approximately 30° celsius..."

So where is San Diego and what are we doing here? Check the map below and can you find the state that San Diego is in?

Task 1:

Your first task is to research San Diego or California. What is the weather like there? Is it famous for anything? Why would we be visiting here? Do a spider-web mind map on the things you find out.

We're here...

Any ideas where we are yet? Well, San Diego has one of the largest zoos in the world with over 3500 animals. Welcome to San Diego Zoo...

Task 2:

Access and view a selection of live web cams on https://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/live-cams

Choose one particular web cam and view. Write a dialogue of what you would imagine the particular animal species might say to each other. If you are viewing one animal on their own, write a monologue (conversation in one’s head with oneself).

Task 3:

Watch 3 videos of your choice at the link https://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/videos and write a summary of what you learned during each video. Remember to use descriptive writing, ISPACE openers and enhance your work with accompanying illustrations.

Task 4:

Read and discuss articles based on some animals to be found at San Diego zoo from either of the following links:

After reading, design and compile a poster of ‘interesting facts’ on an A4 or A3 sheet, perhaps including one interesting fact per animal.

Task 5:

Read stories on real life animals at https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/stories.

Pick your favourite story and write a diary of a day in the life of that particular animal.

Task 6:

Create a craft of your choice based on the theme of San Diego Zoo and its inhabitants. I particularly liked the Caterpillar keepsake box idea and the Zany zebra puppet! Have a scroll through and if you come up with another idea yourself based on the same theme, that’s great too! Suitable ideas may be found at the following link: https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/activities

Task 7:

Design an exhibit area for the animal of your choice using the following guidelines. Draw it on an A4 or A3 sheet and label:

Consider these factors when designing an enclosure:

• Location(s) of drinking water and feeding area

• Pool or other water source for bathing, playing, or cooling off

• Space and structures that enable animals to climb, run, dig, swim, fly, or exercise

• Areas where animals can perch, rest, nest, or have privacy from Zoo or Park visitors

• Adequate light for diurnal animals and darkness for nocturnal animals

• Method for heating or cooling the enclosure

• Barriers between the animals and visitors that are safe for both

• Safe and efficient ways for keepers to clean the exhibit

• A positive experience for visitors, in which they can get a good view of the animals and read information about them.

Time to go home...

Unfortunately, our your is over and its time to go home. But lucky for you, you can come back any time on this virtual tour. And read so much on the amazing animals that live/have lived at San Diego Zoo. Or check in on the live-cams or highlight videos.

Maths

Back to normality and this week we'd like you to look at 2D shapes. Please have a look at and try some of the activities on pages 135-138 of your Mathemagic books. You could use matchsticks, hard spaghetti or anything else you have at home to do the activity on pages 135/136. Again, if unsure of anything skip it and let us know anything you found very difficult at 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie

Mental Maths

Please also continue with your Mental Maths books with Week 35, pages 104 to 106 in actual book or pages 108-110 online.

A sample digital book can be found here when clicking 'Preview Book': https://www.prim-ed.ie/shop/new-wave-mental-maths-3rd-class/

Answers for Week 34 and other weeks can be found here

PE

2 more fun activities this week. Use the slides here to help you. As mentioned last week, complete all 6 activities over the 3 weeks (last week, this week and next week) and send us some pictures, and we will send out a digital certificate to you to say well done.

We haven't forgotten about the Virtual Explore Cavan Challenge. The challenge runs until this Friday June 12th so keep going with your steps! And let us know how it's going for you. All resources available in previous week's PE posts here.

Sports Day - Week 2

SPHE

Finally, we thought we would share this calendar which hopefully will inspire you to think positively by completing small challenges each day in June.
