May 18th - 22nd

Hi again everybody,

We've heard from lots of people this week again. Please keep the emails/letters/work/pictures coming to us at 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie

We have a little easing of restrictions of meeting people outdoors from today, so let us know what you're doing and let's try and get an email from every single third class pupil this week. We can't wait to hear from you.

The weather has been amazing recently but is supposed to take a turn for the worse this week. So even more reason to try out some of the activities we are suggesting below. Don't forget the RTÉ Home School Hub each day at 11am, the TG4 Cúla4 ar Scoil each day at 10am and start the day off at 9am with PE with Joe.

As always, take care and stay safe,

Mr Lyons, Ms O'Reilly, Ms McLean and Ms Peyton

Maths

We are continuing our look back on fractions this week. This week's work is a little harder than last week's, but all still work covered this year. As usual, we are using Busy at Maths 3 by CJ Fallon to correspond with the work we have already completed in our Mathemagic books. Like last week, there are superb tutorial/game videos that help explain the concepts corresponding to different pages. Please look and interact with these tutorials before doing the work on that page. Just click on each one to see the tutorial.

Page 102 - 4 Equal Pieces - This one is very easy but rest are more beneficial.

We have also included the answers to last week's fractions work from pages 66 - 73 of Busy at Maths.

Mental Maths - Please also continue with your Mental Maths books with Week 32, pages 95 to 97 in actual book or pages 99-101 online.

A sample digital book can be found here when clicking 'Preview Book': https://www.prim-ed.ie/shop/new-wave-mental-maths-3rd-class/

We have attached the answers for Week 31 below. Click each to enlarge.

English

Reading Zone - We are onto the final unit of our Reading Zone books. Please read the story 'A Lesson in Sharing' and then complete activities on pages 127 and 128 in your copies.

Grammar - We're going to ask you to revise the work we did on capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks again this week. Please revise the slides and complete the work on this page of New Treasury 3 (pg 115) available on CJ Fallon's website also.

Punctuation

Writing/Oral Language - The response to the Lighthouse writing last week has been very good. The closing date for the competition is Tuesday. Please find details on how to enter here.

We have been delighted with all writing that has been sent to us. We'd love to see and read more so keep sending your writing to us at 3rdclassteachers@virginians.ie

This week, we are using something a little different for our inspiration for our writing and oral language work. We're using a music video for a really summery song but it's the video we want you to focus on more. While watching, ask yourself these questions at different stages:

  • Watch the first 20 seconds - how is the girl feeling? What makes you think that? Why might she be excited? What clues do you get from the girl's movements and expressions that she is happy?

  • Pause just before a minute - how has the girl's feelings changed? Why do you think that is? What might she have lost? How has her face and body movement changed and what emotion does this portray? What could she do now that may help?

  • Pause again at 1.42 - Has the girl's feelings changed even more now? Why do you think that maybe?

  • Once the giraffe appears - are you shocked why? How does the girl feel now?

Do you like the video? I really like the surprise of finding out what the girl's pet is. I really thought it was going to be a dog.

For our writing this week, we'd like you to re-write this video as a story. Imagine you are the girl (change to a boy if you prefer) and write about your day.

  • Waking up and how you feel - describe weather

  • Running downstairs and seeing your pet (give a name but not the animal) is missing

  • How you then feel (show don't tell - shaking, eyes well up etc.)?

  • What next do you do (swing, posters, door to door)?

  • Still no sign of the pet - how do you feel? Why do you go to the park?

  • Why jungle gym? Describe touch feeling of your pet. How do you feel?

  • Describe playing with pet.

  • Remember, the best part about the video was the surprise at the end of the girl's pet being a giraffe. The director kept it a secret. He gave us the impression that it was just a normal pet. Your job is to do the same in your writing.

We can't wait to read some of your pieces this week!

Gaeilge

Abair Liom - Féach ar an bpictiúr seo faoina seomraí codlata arís. Ansin, deán iarracht é a úsáid chun labhairt i nGaeilge faoi na rudaí atá ar siúl. Mar roimhe, rinneamar é seo ar scoil an bhlian sin. Úsáid na ceistenna sin chun comhrá a spreagadh:

Look at this picture about the bedrooms. Then, try to speak in Irish about what's going on. As before, we did this in school this year. Use these questions to help with the conversation:

Cá bhfuil Seán agus Síofra? Where are Seán and Síofra?

Cad atá siad ag déanamh? What are they doing?

Cad a fheiceann tú sa phictiúr? What do you see in the picture?

Cá bhfuil clog/ríomhaire/postaer/cuid eadaí/leabhair/bróga srl. Síofra? Where is Síofra's clock/computer/clothes/books/shoes etc?

Cá bhfuil liathróid/lampa/stocaí/mála scoile/bríste srl. Seán? Where is Seán's ball/lamp/socks/school bag/trousers etc?

faoin - under the ar an - on the san - in the in aice leis an - beside the

Éist ar an gcómhra faoin pictiúr seo freisin anseo. Listen to the conversation about this picture here.

Ansin, déan iarracht ar na gníomhaíochtaí ar lch. 43 san Abair Liom a dhéanamh faoina réamhfhocail ar, in aice le agus faoi i bhur gcóipleabhair.

Then, try to do the exercises on page 43 in Abair Liom about the prepositions ar (on), in aice le (beside) and faoi (under) in your copies.

Am don Léamh - Leigh an scéal seo faoi Niamh ag gearradh gruaig Liam. Ansin, déan iarracht na cleachtaí ar an dara leathanach a dheanamh ó bhéal.

Read the story about Niamh cutting Liam's hair. Then, try to do the exercises on the second page orally.

SESE

We're going top ask you to research a scientific word this week. The word is DENSITY. We want you to explore what density is and where you would see density in action in everyday life. Your job is to be able to explain clearly what density means to someone who doesn't know. Are you up for the challenge?

To find out a little more about density and where we see it, you could check whether things in your house float or sink. This depends a lot on density.

We have also attached 2 experiments you may be able to do at home that involve density too. Enjoy, have fun and if you feel confident, send us a video or picture of a poster etc. you've made, explaining density.
