Released as a limited/special edition, bundled with a red Play & Charge kit(grey cord, red battery), but also bundled with the red Resident Evil 5 Special Edition Xbox 360 Console on March 13th, 2009.

It’s a red shell front and back, a red sync, start/back buttons and a non-glossy guide. Then it has black accents of thumbsticks, d-pad, bumpers, triggers, and a matte black bottom strip, but glossy black top trim. While still having grey bottom/top input ports. Does have a matching red battery compartment shell/cover.

  • This red controller had a longer production run than usual for limited editions at the time. Earliest I have found is week 20(29 for retail units) of 2008, and latest week is 49 of 2009, so more than a full year run. They do tend to sell higher priced, but they shouldn't be all that rare.

*Tip for any sealed owners. The alkaline batteries sit behind the controller in the packaging, if they leak, it can get inside the controller and all the way down onto the board. I opened a package like this, and while I knew the batteries had leaked, I never knew how bad it could get. It's unfortunate that you'd have to completely unseal the packaging to pull the batteries out, but if not doing that, keep an eye on battery leak signs(white smudges in the packaging). Also handle the packaging with extra care, maybe the bouncing around in shipping caused my package to leak worse than usual. It was a big pain to clean up, and scary when I spotted it on the board, but fortunately after a good cleaning, the controller still worked. The controller leak album can be found HERE.

Release Packaging:

  • Pretty close to the other, but is missing the orange Live logo on the front. Not sure why the differences.

  • Should have Energizer batteries behind the controller?

Other Release Packaging:

  • It's possible to have started in late 2008 as well, but the overall change to the orange Live logo is all over 2009 serials.

  • Will have Duracell batteries behind the controller.

Minor change to the back of the early orange Live packaging: Has black play and charge kit logos on the green bottom. And a bunch more lines of text on the top portion. The 2 packages I've found had serials ending in 830.

Valentine's Day Giveaway, Feb. 2009:

  • 5 were given away in the UK, unsure if any were given out in other countries. Old youtube video, quality is low, but it shows it also came with a card.

  • Controller is WC01, -077, and serial on this example ends in 848.

UK Packaging:

  • AUA-00016(EU)

  • X15-30035-01(EU)

Japan Packaging:

Australia/Asia Packaging:

Matching battery shell/cover.

WC01 Back: -077, -082

MSK-WC01 Back: -079, -083

Racing Red DV.820 Controller

This controller is unique. While the back sticker is essentially retail ready, the serial ending in 820 is super early, and the sticker to the right "Racing Red DV" indicates this may have been the codename for it.

DV is the last stage of development testing, pretty much used as a show of how they come out of mass production. Which is why they can have full retail stickers, but still produced much earlier than the sold retail controllers.

Green Limited Wireless Controller:

  • Release/End Date: Sep. 30th 2008(or Oct. 24th for EU?)

  • Regions: Only available in Europe, Asia and Latin America

  • Retail Price: £39.99 or maybe even £47.98

  • Sold As: Individual Packaging(blister plastic)

  • Package Model: B4F-00075(EU?)

  • Package Part No: X14-92979-01

  • UPC: 0882224737050(EU)

  • Batteries: Energizer

  • Controller Port Colour: Grey

  • Controller Model: WC01=TP23 board = Controller Part No: X801769-078

Showed up first at a Konami booth at GamesCom August, 2008, was rumored to have been bundled with Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, but was ultimately sold individually as a Limited Edition controller.

The dpad is 16 directions vs the standard 8, although the only game I can find that supports it, is “Pro Evolution Soccer 2009”, so the 16 way d-pad probably won’t make a difference in day to day use. Is super rare inside the US, but looking at UK Ebay, they seem to be a bit more commonly found/listed.

It’s lime green on the front and back with a glossy green top trim, a non-glossy guide button, then green start/back, bumpers, sync and triggers and does have a matching lime green battery shell + Play & Charge kit battery. Then it has grey thumbsticks, d-pad, a matte grey bottom trim, and input ports.

  • These had a short production run, earliest I have found is week 26 and latest is week 41 of 2008, so about a 15 week run.

Release Packaging:

  • Has the orange Live logo.

  • Will have Energizers batteries behind the controller.

Matching Play and Charge kit packaging: Grey cord, green rechargeable battery.

I bought these 2 in the summer of 2019. Not 100% sure why they have a front sticker, but the serials also seem to be a bit unique in that they end in 826. The majority of retail green's I have seen are 830 and above.

Besides my 2, a few more users messaged me that they also have some green 826's as well. So there are definitely more of these out there than I expected. One 826 also has a silver sticker on the side labeled "SPECTRUM4 DV".

One user also obtained one that is an 820 serial. So while I'm not exactly sure what is going on, I do feel confident anything below an 830 serial is considered rare/unique. Whether used as demonstration units or used simply to test the production quality.

Sometimes different lighting/cameras can make the shade of green different like below.

Walmart Dragon Limited Wireless Controller:

  • Release/End Date: Oct. 28th, 2008

  • Regions: Only available in United States.

  • Retail Price: $49.74

  • Sold As: Individual Packaging(Walmart Exclusive, blister plastic, bundled with a wired grey headset).

  • Package Model: GTA-00017

  • Package Part No: X14-92788-01

  • UPC: 882224743297

  • Batteries: Energizer

  • Controller Port Colour: Grey

  • Controller Model: WC01=TP23 board = Controller Part No: X817778-001

Can also just be called the ‘Xbox 360 Dragon Controller’. It is an odd design to be a Walmart exclusive, has a weird eye and old style telephone on the left side, with a black dragon on the right, the style is only on the front piece, the back is a blank white(same shade as the white/grey controllers). Both thumbsticks, bumpers, back and sync buttons are black, while the d-pad, start, and triggers are white. Then it has a matte black bottom trim, but glossy white top trim, grey input ports, and a non-shiny guide button.

  • This had a pretty short run, from looking at the serials, it only ran for about 6-8 weeks of production. It's possible to be a bit longer as I can only go off serials that I can find. But the earliest retail I have found is week 29 of 2008, and oldest is week 35 of 2008, so those would be the weeks of production. The Walton DV2 was made in week 27, so it's possible retail production started that same week, or maybe even week 28.

*Tip for any sealed owners. The alkaline batteries sit behind the controller in the packaging, if they leak, it can get inside the controller and all the way down into the board. I opened a package like this, and while I knew the batteries had leaked, I never knew how bad it could get. Original Release Packaging:

  • Has a big blue Only at Wal*Mart logo inside of the packaging itself.

  • Also bundled with a black/grey headset.

  • Will have Energizers batteries behind the controller.

Sam's Club Packaging:

  • Not exactly a change, just a Sam's Club(owned by Walmart, store is like Costco) blue sticker on the outside of the packaging, placed over the Walmart. Everything else is the same and nothing special about the UPC or serials.
