Discourse & Resistance is a methods course focused on “critical discourse analysis” as a method for inquiry, analysis and action. Focusing on language in a range of forms (words, images and embodied interaction), the course provides participants with materials that ground them in contemporary conversations in the field of discourse studies, with a particular interest in power and resistance.
A series of protests in Hong Kong in 2019 has become a hot topic of international attention. The U.S. and Chinese media coverage and the focus of the events in Hong Kong tells a completely different story. Media v. Stories: News representation of Hong Kong, this is the final project I wrote in this class. I analyzed and discussed the differences between U.S. and Chinese media news coverage of the events in Hong Kong. Using the text-based critical discourse analysis methods, I focused on how media from both countries using different words to tell stories and use of the concept of democracy in the coverage of both media.
