I want to be seen and I want to be heard. These were the first words I used at the beginning of my essay when I applied to MACS. Now, I think I'm one step closer to my goal of seeing, hearing, speaking, and feeling about a different world with different stories, in different ways. And then let myself be seen and heard by the world as well. In the age of information explosion, it is important to discern valid information as well as independent critical thinking. At the same time, how to speak up? What is the purpose of speaking out? What is the meaning of personal narrative? These are also questions that people should keep thinking about.
In this portfolio, I will tell the story of my journey in Cultural Studies, and I will talk about the projects and reflections that I have made during these two years. I came with a lot of questions, and I will end my journey in MACS with more questions. But thinking never ends and learning never ends. The questions I don't find answers to will motivate me to experience and practice. Maybe I will never get the answer to some questions, because there is not only right and wrong, nor is there only one standard answer to things in this world. All I have to do is keep improving and try to find a better way to deal with problems, as long as I don't stop thinking.
Master of Arts in Cultural Studies (MACS).
This is a record of what I have learned and gained at MACS. When someone asks me what my major was in my Master's and what I did, I can take this as my proud answer. I also hope that more people who are interested in cultural studies will learn about the program. More specifically, I hope that more Chinese students at the university will know about the Master of Arts in Cultural Studies (MACS).
Why would I want to make this Portfolio in two languages?
I want to use my language strength to do worldwide cultural studies but not just European or American cultural studies. Harewood and Krabill worried that "vast swaths of cultural studies literature being produced in languages other than English are being lost for faculty and students alike" (pg.18). Different voices and discourses are essential for cultural studies, and I also hope I could use my language strength to study literature in Chinese. Literature in other languages is important because they contain different ideologies, discourses, and many different things in cultural studies. In "Marxism Cultural theory and popular culture: An introduction," wrote by Storey mentioned that "The Marxist approach to culture insists that texts and practices must be analyzed in relation to their historical conditions of production (and in some versions, the changing conditions of their consumption and reception" (pg. 67). With the different historical conditions of each country, their cultural studies literature would also contain different perspectives that scholars analyzed.
