In Cultural Studies we have always considered media to be central to the production and dissemination of knowledge, and as such, have taken all forms of media practice, production, and organization very seriously. In this course, we considered the politics of representation as inseparable from media production practices and the media industries that promote, sustain, and sometimes contest them. Over the quarter each student began or continue a path of analyzing the media of their choice.
I analyzed the differences between Douyin and TikTok. By comparing the differences between the local Chinese Douyin and the international version of TikTok, one can understand the differences in media between different countries. It is also an opportunity to look at the different discourses and ideologies of each country from TikTok. It is also a chance to think about the influence of national polity and dominant power on culture and people's thinking. There are also some commonalities between Douyin and TikTok that provide a glimpse of some of the problems that people would have worldwide. I also compared TikTok and Douyin’s Terms of Service and found some interesting points.
