Winston is in the room with no darkness, also known as the prison of committing thoughtcrime. While in there he wasn't able to tell the difference between night or day, if it had been 20 minutes, or one hour. The room had no light entering, windows did not exist in the cell room he was in. The room had about ten to fifteen men and women. There were four sided walls, each one containing one telescreen. No one was allowed to move and when they did the telescreen would speak, ordering them to stay still. Then an older woman entered the room with a guard holding her, she was trying her best to kick them off her. The guards threw her very harshly on Winstons lap. She gets up and tells Winston the guards don't know how to treat a lady, she then begins to burp and suddenly bends over to throw up, she claims its better to let it out then hold it in. She puts her arm around Winston and asks what his name is, Winstons says his name is Smith, she too claims her name is Smith and says she might be his mother. Winston wonders for a moment and thought the older woman could be his mother considering she fits every potential idea of her actually being his mother. Winston remembered no one will save you from Brotherhood but maybe they will sneak in a razor blade, but the only use would be for suicide.
Winston then notices Mr. Ampleforth, he looked as if he hadn't shaved in days. He had no shoes on, just his toes peeking out from his socks. He and Winston spoke for a while. Mr. Ampleforth talked of poetry and the English language. They went on for a while until ordered not to speak from the telescreen. Shortly soon a guard enters and takes hold of Mr. Ampleforth. The guard shouts’ “room 101”. A man in khakis and a sports shirt enters and it was Parsons. He was in there and he was ashamed of what he had done. He told Winston he didn't know he had a bad thought in him until one night when he was sleeping. While he was sleeping he claimed, ‘Down with Big Brother’’. He was proud of his daughter for catching him and turning him into the thought police. Eventually Parson was removed.
The only thing on Winston's mind was food, the razor, O’Brien, and Julia. Then another man enters the room. He looked extremely skinny and in dire need of food. Across from Winston was a man with no chin, he was a hefty man who offered the skinny man a piece of bread. The telescreen ordered them to stop what they were doing immediately, nervously they stood completely still. The telescreen told the chinless man to drop the piece of bread and face the door. In entered a Guard stating; “room 101”. The chinless man began to quake and refused to let the guard take them away, he wanted anything but room 101. He held onto the iron pole that held the seats to the ground. He said to kill him now he has nothing more to confess, he'd rather see the guards chop the heads off from his family members than to be put in room 101. One guard broke the hand of the chinless man causing him to let go of the iron pole. From there they dragged him out of the room by his feet.
Winston wonders if Julia is in pain and if he would take twice as much pain to stop the pain for Julia. He says yes but then begins to wonder, you can't know the answer unless faced with pain. Time has passed and the cell door opens once more. It was O’Brien, Winston asked him if they got him too. O’Brien says they had caught him a long time ago and that Winston had known this all along. Winston knew there was nothing worse than physical pain and during that time there were no heroes.
Winstons refusal to believe Big Brother's rules and accept the change in history is the reason for his crime. O’Brien goes on to torture him asking him questions about the rules of Big Brother and if he truly believes them. Winston holds his ground and accepts more torture, even if Winston was to agree with O’Brien he would still be tortured because O’Brien knows if Winston truly believes or not. Through all the pain Winston grows to love O’Brien because he believes O’Brien isn't the cause of the pain Winston is feeling. Winston begins to understand the practice of doublethink and the claims O’Brien makes. Winston then asks about Julia, O’Brien says she betrayed Winston immediately. Then Winston asks about Big Brother and if he exists like Winston does, O’Brien says Winston doesn't exist. Winston then asks about brotherhood and what's in room 101. O’Brien says Winston will never know the answer to the brotherhood and that everyone knows what's in room 101.
