Chapter 14:
Within chapter fourteen, Winston finally speaks to O’Brian. Although the exchange is brief O’Brian tells Winston to meet with him to give him a copy of the tenth edition dictionary. Winston believes that this is code and he has finally found a way to Goldstein and the brotherhood. We are then shown Winston waking up from a nightmare after spending the night with Julia. Memories of his mother appear as well as his life as a child. Reflecting back he calls himself selfish and greedy. He then remembers his sister and mother disappearing and tells Julia of his guilt and his betrayal to his family. Both agree to be loyal to each other and never betray each other. Winston defines betrayal as leaving their feeling for one another which he said is not up to the party control.
