Julia and Winston are at O'Brien's house. When they enter, O’Brien is working at his desk. His house is quaint unlike the rest of the modern households consisting of dingy walls and rickety floors. O’Brien invites Julia and Winston to sit. He gives them a glass of red wine to sip while they discuss "Brotherhood”. O’Brien goes to turn off the telescreen. Considering he's a part of the inner party of Big Brother he can do this. Although it's recommended the inner party doesn't leave it off for long. O’Brien goes to tell them the nitty gritty of the Brotherhood. Basically dehumanizing your morals. Throwing acid into small children faces, murdering, and even committing suicide are all things Winston and Julia agreed to following. Except one, O’Brien asked if they agree to never having both Julia and Winston see eachother again. Julia without hesitation said no. Winston after much thought eventually said no. Although they’re a part of the brotherhood if they get caught they must confess to everything they’ve done. After discussing the “Brotherhood” Winston and Julia had to leave O’Briens house at different times so no suspicion occurred. When they left they were given a white tablet to consume, this way they wouldn't smell of wine. When Julia left O’Brien continued discussing with Winston, he asked where his secret hiding spots were. Winston, having faith in O'Brien, told him where. Right before he left O’Brien gave Winston a plan on how Winston can get ahold of the Goldstein's Book. Winston left and when he looked back it was if O’Brien had forgotten he existed.
Hate week was at its highest point. There was a speaker telling the crowd that Oceania was at war with Eastasia and Eurasia was an ally the entire time. People went crazy and started throwing stuff around. Ripping posters and banners. During this time a man handed Winston a briefcase in a way where it wasn't noticeable by claiming that Winston had dropped his briefcase. Inside the briefcase was the Goldstein book, he knew it would be a while before he could get a chance to read it. Eventually people had to go to work. Everyone at the records department worked 18 out of 24 hours. Mattresses were brought to the office, sandwiches and coffee were passed around. Winston was finally done with work and was able to go to his hiding spot. He sat down and began to read
At this point we have the book within the book, we read what Winston is reading. The chapters provided to us were chapters one and three. The book takes part of the big quotes from the party's slogan, “WAR IS PEACE” and “IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”. The book goes on to explain the history of social classes that we as humans have known since the beginning of time. Those classes are lower, middle, and upper class with the exception of the inner party, outer party, and Proles. The book also explains how the three nations came to be. Oceania was created when the British Empire was absorbed into the United States. Eurasia was created when Russia took Europe and made them into one. The remaining nations are what make Eastasia. The book explains the book can never get better or worse because no two nations can defeat one. The war was made up to keep the three nations people preoccupied so the high class remains in power. The war is all about ruling and power. Julia enters the room and is so glad to see Winston. He goes to explain the message behind the book and what he has read so far. He tells Julia that doublethink is a way for the party to keep the motive of war and even though they know the history they are writing is false it keeps the mentality and them in power.
After Julia and Winston had laid in bed for what seemed like a long time. They finally got up for the day. Winston had noticed a lady outside singing. She was an older lady who had seemed to have had several kids by the form of her body. Winston looked at her and realized she was a beautiful woman because of her strength from having that womanly birth giving body. He knew Julia and him could never have children due to the generation in which the two of them lived . The idea of having children was something Winston realized he wanted. A tune from a truck began, a tune that lived and surpassed all the hate that has become of Ociana. He realized that everyone sang and still tried to keep peace within their lives except for the Party. When talking, a voice from the back of Winston and Julia mimicked them. It continued to repeat every sentence they spoke. Behind them they heard a crash, glass was shattered. When they looked it was the picture that had fallen off the wall, exposing the telescreen from which the mocking voice was coming from. Shortly after Mr.Charington's place was surrounded. In came men in all black. Winston and Julia became frightened not knowing what to do besides obey any orders that came to them. One of the men kicked Winstons ankles pushing him to his knees. Another punched Julia knocking the breath out of her. A man picked her up and carried her out like a sack. From that moment on Winston would never see Julia again. In came a man who looked awfully similar to Mr. Charington, in fact it was him. His appearance was different, his hair was black, he no longer had spectacles, his eyebrows were groomed and no longer bushy. Mr. Charington no longer looked like a man in his older years but a man who was now in his thirties. Winston realized he was in the presence of the thought police.
