Chapters 8-10 Analysis:
It is evident within this chapter that Winston is exhibiting real rebellion against the party while also searching for the past. His first act of this is trying to find out about before the war. When talking to the old man his curiosity led him into a dangerous area looking for answers. Although the old man didn't give him any real answers he gave him the mental will to look for them. As a character Winston is curious and abnormal compared to any other citizen in Oceana. This led to his second act of rebellion which was buying coral from the antique shop. The coral reminded him of the simplicity of the past and how things could be made for beauty over practicality. Winstons aware the act is not illegal but it is enough to get on the radar for inner party members. Even so he continues to visit the store in an act of silent rebellion. His rebellion is only shunned for when he sees the women following him. Even then he continues to go home and write in his diary stating that he may have been caught but he knew his capture was inevitable to begin with. However when Julia was truly a secret admirer Winston engages in a new form of rebellion. With his intimate relationship with Julia he now is setting himself free from the control of the party. Overall as a character Winston is taking big steps to state his individuality and quench for the history of the past.
