BIOGRAPHY

She was born in Canero (Asturias) in 1938. She is a Spanish biochemist. Her father was a doctor, for this reason she was interested in chemestry and medecin. When she was 16, she went to Madrid to do the access test for chemestry and medecin studies.

In 1958, she met Severo Ochoa who would had a very big influence in her career. She made her doctorate with Alberto Sols.

In 1964, with her husband, Eladio Viñuela, she went to U.S.A, to the Scientific Department of the Medecin School of New york, where she would work with Severo Ochoa.FA

In 1967, she returned to Spain to develop the molecular biology.

At present she is working at ``Ad Honorem´´ and she develops her work in the Molecular Biology Severo Ochoa Center in Madrid.

In 2016, she became the first woman to receive the Echegaray Medal, given by the Royal Academy of Exact Sciences, Physics and Biology

SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS

She investigated a virus for 47 years(PHI29), and is the inventor of the most worthwhile patent in Spain.

At the end of the seventies, she began studying the bacterian PHI29. This virus belongs to the Podoviriade family and infects
