Ameenah Gurib Fakim is a Mauritian scientist, researcher in synthetic chemistry whose passion is organic chemistry, As a matter of fact, she contributed a lot in science, she worked on molecules, peptides and amino acids... Specially in Mauritius and Africa.

And on 5 June 2015 became the first woman president in the island, whose aim was to bring her perspective and her concerns as a scientist to a wider audience.

biography:

She was born in Port Louis, Mauritius on 17th October 1959 and she is still alive currently she is 60 years old. Then she completed her academic training in the United Kingdom, where she received a BA from the University of Surrey in 1983 and a PhD from the University of Exeter in 1987. In the same year she joined the University of Mauritius, where she was Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and Dean of the Faculty of Science.

Subsequently, she was the general manager of the International Centre for Pharmaceutical Development (Centre International de Développement Pharmaceutique, in French).

In 2015 the majority party in Mauritius asked her to become president, and since then she is the first woman president in the island, in addition to her non-political experience, actually her aim as president is to bring her perspective and her concerns as a scientist to a wider audience.

In fact, her motto is “to achieve sustainable development goals, it is necessary to rely on science and technology” Ameenah Gurib Fakim tries to explain us that the best way to develop, for example, a country, is by the science.

She had a long career as scientist, and currently apart from being the Muritius President, Ameenah Gurib Fakim is working on many other scientist projects. Such as the investigation of new skills for global warming, and she is promoting new investment in science and technology in Mauritius and in Africa in general.

  • For example she is improving her relationship with the Bill Gates Foundation to get 10 doctoral research scholarships on the island or the CARIE (Coalition for African Research, innovation and entrepreneurship) to bring together several agencies that have decided to join forces to promote research and innovation in Africa.
  • Another example is her investment in NEPAD the Welcome Foundation and the National Institutes of Health in the United States.
  • In 1990 when she was working at the university, Ameenah Gurib Fakim managed in her company Center for Phytotherapy and Research (CEPHYR) a project whose aim was the creation of a range of herbal medicines, this company found customers in perfumery section specially for the essential oil of the Rodrigues Island limo.
  • Another achievement was taking advantage of medicinal plants from Mauritius and make susceptible ingredients for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.
