Josefina Castellví , also called Pepita was born in Barcelona on July the 1th of 1935.
She was the daughter of a Spanish medician, thanks to she inherited his biology passion. Futhermore he encouraged her and her sister to study a degree to be independent woman and earn her life for her own. So he was advanced to the 50' Spanish society.
She was determined to study about marine flora but no ones studied that in her age. So she went to France where she spent a few studying and researching in a laboratory.
When she come back to Spain in 1960 she got her microbiology degree in Barcelona with a Extraordinary Award. She became a teacher specially in marine bacterieology, years later, she upgraded as her director.
Due to her enthusiasm to study bacterias in extrem conditions she travelled to the Antartic continent and in 1984, she became to the first Spanish woman who participed in an International Expedition in those frozen lands.
She was very focused in her degree and she had not time to get married nor have children. In fact she is actually a woman pride of her jobs, so she doesn't regret her vital decisions.
She still alive.
Initially, she felt discriminate because always the men leave her in dry land when the go expedition to search for proofs, in the laboratory.
She had to manage for make them think that she was preparing her doctoral tesis and requesting that were leaving her to go " only once " with the scientists, this way to verify the place where the samples were gathered.
They were going out for 15 days and already she did not turn it to asking more. In the following occasion, she prepared everything and was raised to the ship without asking already more the director for permission, since she had promised him.
Since then, it has published more than seventy scientific works and has taken part in 36 oceanographic campaigns and from she retired in 2000, though she complains that every day sits down " more ineffective ", it she has overturned her enthusiasm in the lace of lace-bobbins and in travelling.
