I am a retired lecturer at a small private college in upstate New York as well as a retired social worker. I relocated to a 55+ active living community in Evanston Illinois in August 2023. One of the many activities I participate in is a writing group, which has been a wonderful experience. We are an intimate, trusting group who regularly share our most personal thoughts and help each other grow.

Occasionally open 

Enough to see his

96-year old eyes

Like long slits

Occasionally open

Seldom visible

Hidden in soft folds of skin

The old eyes

Also seldom visible

Hidden in sagging eyelids

The old eyes 

Will close forever

On May 27th

Never to see again

The young eyes 

Will just start to open

On August 27th

With more and more to see

The old eyes closed

Just too early

To see the young eyes open
