About Mark
Molded by the cultural gumbo that is his hometown of New Orleans, Mark believes in the creative power of “what if” (Visit NOLA and you’ll believe too!). From his formative years at Northwestern University to his current writing on indie TV and film projects, Mark uses his comedic sensibilities to tell universal stories across genres (drama, romcom, horror, and thriller). Mark especially enjoys practicing the voodoo art of writing with others because collaborative magic is the most powerful way to turn “what ifs” into realities.
Mark lives in Evanston with his wife and two kids.
About the Poem
“Our Deaths Will Be Televised” was inspired by Gil Scott-Heron’s classic piece, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” and my own feelings about being a Black man in America during the racially-charged events of the last few years.
Our Deaths Will Be Televised
Our deaths will be televised
Our pain the product
Streamed into your consciousness
Shootings
Suicides
Knees on necks
Edited to be consumed without context
Our deaths will be televised
Our pain the product
Delivered like a narcotic
Too many episodes to binge
To numb minds
To absolve accountability
To negate our humanity
Our deaths will be televised
Our pain the product
Selling storylines of sadness on repeat
Silencing our souls
Our boldness
Our joy
Our wonder
Until we are forgotten
Our deaths will be televised
