Teachers As Change Leaders

The challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic demand a major shift in learning modalities moving away from the traditional face to face approach to remote learning modality. Policy efforts made by lead agencies in the education sectors brought real burden to our schools and educators to be more agile in adapting new ways on how it could develop and deliver learning modules through various options for remote learning.

This Course asserts that developing a professional learning community is both a framework and a strategy to address these demands, shift to various learning modalities , and bring about change in our teaching practices. With teachers as change leaders together with other community stakeholders as allies and co-facilitators, PETA believes that we can create a community culture where multi-sectoral collaboration is installed to ensure delivery of learning for our students.

Building a Community of Creative & Critical Teacher as Change Leader

The diagram above shows a change process that begins with an audit of the teacher's current context and realities. The teacher needs to map out the challenges and issues he/she will face when he/she begins to navigate the so called teaching in the "new normal". One can look at the context and identify key or pressing issues in each area and prioritize what needs to be addressed. What sorts of improvements are needed and what are the changes that the teacher wants to bring about in areas identified armed with the technological, pedagogical, attitudinal, and content knowledge competency.

The audit jump starts the beginning of a process towards building a professional learning community where the teachers serve as the change leaders collaborating with other stakeholders and change facilitators from within or outside the school. All the six elements and components should be installed. Ensuring the presence of all these elements will eventually lead to achieving the change that we envisioned for our learners.

Building a professional learning community of creative and critical educators is not merely about improvement in the school's performance but the creation of life-long changes in students' lives through collaboration, openness, and the learning and re-learning by the educators themselves.

Our expectations were grouped using the TPACK Model with a tweak. TPACK stands for technology, pedagogy and content knowledge. In this Course, PETA added the behavioural component of learning, the attitudes and actions.
