audible means able to hear
nonverbal does not mean audible; it means without words
nonverbal cues include more than just gestures & facial expression--it is HOW you say something
But wait a minute, aren't words needed for that? Yes, but the words do not make it nonverbal. It is how you SAY the words, the cues you put WITH the words that make it NONVERBAL.
say each one three different way & project a different attitude
Shut the door, Sam.
I really like this song.
I sure hope I get this work done!
How did you change the way you said those things?
With changes in VOLUME, RATE, TONE, right? That is nonverbal.
You never changed the words, but you changed the message, right?
That is why it is nonverbal -- has nothing to do with words--it is HOW it is said.
when we change volume, rate, tone, etc., those are SOUND CUES
when we use facial expressions, gestures, movement, those are SILENT CUES
other silent cues include posture, objects, color and other non-word items that send a message
remember verbal means words - nonverbal: without words
nonverbal = without words
and the two types of nonverbal communication
