FAFSA (Free application for federal student aid)
(for U.S. citizens and permanent residents)
(for U.S. citizens and permanent residents)
Create your FSA ID: https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm
Students should create an FSA ID before starting their FAFSA. Make sure students write down their login information; they're notorious for losing login details. If parents have SSN, instruct student's parent (or the student on their behalf) to create an FSA ID. If parents do not have SSN, they will submit signature page by mail.
Complete FAFSA here: https://fafsa.ed.gov/ (use Chrome, IE, Safari or Mozilla Firefox)
The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) allows a direct transfer of accurate financial information from the IRS to the student's FAFSA. If the parents filed taxes with SSN, they can use the IRS DRT and should use it to avoid having to complete income verification forms later. Note that the address on the IRS DRT page must match the address on the taxes EXACTLY or it will not work (literally, if the taxes has an address as 'St.' then it should be 'St. ' on the IRS DRT too; Street, St, st., st, street, all will not work).
