If the student plans on staying in dorms, the school will send housing information and a contract that must be returned. Usually, all this information can be found through an email from the school or the housing portion in the student portal. The earlier a student starts on their housing application, the better their chances of getting their first choice of housing.
Housing deposit: Most if not all universities require a housing deposit separate from the enrollment deposit. Housing deposits may be partially refundable in certain cases, but are usually non refundable. Some schools with impacted student housing, such as San Francisco State, give the option of allowing the student to submit a housing application to reserve a spot before they are even notified of their admission decision.
Housing exemption: If a student lives within a certain mileage of the campus, they are exempt from living on campus their first year. Many of our CSU bound students choose to live at home. Must submit a document to verify this.
Living-Learning and Theme Communities/Floors: Many colleges and universities offer housing specific to student interests. Residential communities vary in things like cultural groups, majors, and other personal interests. These are housing options for students who have a specific interest/living experience in mind. The housing application will usually have a spot for students to indicate interest in a themed floor.
Social media: Students can find Facebook pages to look for potential roommates. The college/university may provide this link in an email or on the housing website.
Remind students that housing costs can vary depending on whether the student chooses a single, double, or triple dorm, as well as the meal plan they choose.
