During my practicum as an elementary school teacher, specifically with 5th-grade students, I have had the opportunity to experience a profoundly transformative journey. This stage has not only been a period of technical learning but also a space to reflect on my vocation, my skills, and the areas where I can grow as a professional. Teaching is far more than transmitting knowledge; it is a task that requires sensitivity, empathy, and a deep understanding of each student’s individual needs.
Working with a diverse group, which includes eight students in special education, has been both a challenge and a privilege. This experience has allowed me to appreciate the importance of inclusion as a fundamental principle of education. Each student is unique, and my goal has been to adapt my strategies to meet their needs, respecting their differences and celebrating their achievements. This approach not only benefits the students but also fosters an environment of respect and collaboration among all classroom members.
One of the most significant lessons I take away from this experience is the importance of creating a healthy, safe, and loving environment for learning. Such an atmosphere not only enhances academic performance but also strengthens students’ self-esteem, confidence, and social skills. I have learned that the emotional climate of the classroom directly impacts the children’s success, and I feel fulfilled knowing I have created a space where my students feel valued and supported.
Despite the accomplishments achieved, I acknowledge that this experience has also allowed me to identify areas where I need to improve. One of these areas is my organization, an essential aspect of effectively managing the multiple responsibilities of teaching. I have started implementing tools such as planners and visual routines to improve my daily structure and ensure every minute in the classroom is well spent. Additionally, I have reflected on my approach to responding to questions that are inappropriate or not age-appropriate for my students. I have decided to work on strategies that allow me to respectfully redirect such interventions, turning them into learning moments or avoiding deviations from the lesson’s purpose.
Nevertheless, I have also identified strengths that have defined my teaching practice. My ability to create an inclusive and loving environment is one of my greatest qualities. This has allowed my students to feel comfortable expressing themselves, participating, and working together, fostering a positive learning community. Moreover, my commitment to their holistic development reflects the passion I feel for this profession. I strive not only to teach academic content but also to help my students develop social, emotional, and ethical skills that will prepare them for life.
This practice has confirmed that I am on the right path. I feel prepared to take on the challenges of teaching, though I recognize that education is a constantly evolving field that requires continuous learning. For this reason, one of my future goals is to pursue a master’s degree in Leadership in Educational Organizations, aiming to lead a school that promotes inclusion, innovation, and excellence. I aspire to create a space where students, teachers, and families work together in a collaborative environment that prioritizes emotional well-being and high-quality learning. My interest in leadership extends beyond administrative management; I also wish to be a source of inspiration for other educators, encouraging teaching practices that adapt to the needs of the 21st century. Additionally, I want to combine my passion for creative writing with teaching, developing educational resources and narratives that inspire students to explore their creativity and critical thinking. Through this integration, I aim to provide tools that enrich teaching and make learning a memorable and meaningful experience.
Finally, my greatest goal is to contribute to Puerto Rico’s development through education. I firmly believe that inclusive and high-quality education has the power to transform lives and build a better country. I want to be a teacher who inspires, guides, and motivates her students to dream big and reach their full potential. Every classroom is an opportunity to plant seeds of change, and I am committed to giving my best to ensure that these seeds flourish into a future full of hope and possibilities.
