Competency 8:
Learning Assessment
Competency 8:
Learning Assessment
"All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with reason. There is nothing higher than reason."
— Immanuel Kant
Learning Assessment:
The student teacher uses assessment strategies to collect learning information from each of her students. Designs and adapts evaluation instruments to guarantee the continuous development of each learner.
During my teaching practice, I implemented various assessment strategies to gather information about each student’s learning and ensure their continuous development. When designing and adapting assessment tools, I aimed to make them clear, fair, and suited to the needs and levels of the students, promoting meaningful learning. One of the main tools I used was detailed rubrics, which I designed to assess projects and book reports.
These rubrics contained specific descriptions for each performance level, allowing me not only to evaluate objectively but also to provide clear and constructive feedback to my students. Before starting each task, I explained how the rubrics would be used, ensuring that they understood the evaluation criteria. This gave them a sense of direction and helped them work with confidence, while also encouraging self-reflection on their strengths and areas for improvement.
Additionally, I designed short tests and exams that included a variety of question types to address different learning styles and skills. These assessments included multiple-choice questions to measure basic knowledge, open-ended questions to evaluate their analytical and application skills, and practical activities that required problem-solving or content creation. When grading the exams, I compiled data that allowed me to identify trends in the group’s results, such as questions that caused greater difficulty or topics where multiple students needed reinforcement. This data also helped me analyze each student’s individual progress, highlighting their advances and areas needing attention.
This balanced and flexible approach to assessment allowed me to collect valuable data on my students’ progress. With this information, I made adjustments to my teaching, such as reinforcing topics that needed more focus or differentiating activities to support those facing greater challenges. In this way, I was able to promote the continuous development of each learner, ensuring that all had the necessary tools to reach their educational goals.

To demonstrate mastery of this eighth competency, Learning Assessment, I am presenting my final laboratory experience work completed as a requirement for my EING 4046 class: Assessment of English as a Second Language Learners, during the first semester of 2023-2024.
With this evidence, I demonstrate my full command of various skills integral to this competence. This includes integrating different works and activities to assess a student's learning. In this case, I observed a student and subsequently implemented various tasks aimed at helping her strengthen her writing and reading comprehension skills. To ensure effectiveness, I assessed the student's abilities beforehand to tailor the learning tools accordingly, providing different evaluation options.
To illustrate how this evidence relates to competence, it's important to highlight the significant learning acquired during the implementation of this laboratory experience. I realized that students' environments differ greatly inside and outside the classroom. By offering my student various evaluation alternatives to obtain quantitative results, I provided opportunities for them to practice their skills and abilities. This, in turn, enables better observation on my part to determine the most suitable evaluation methods for future assessments.
Group professional reflection on the competition
Our professional reflection of the mastery of professional competences was based on the group discussion of each of them, as set out on the academic competencies page. The competition text 8 Learning Assessment was developed by future teachers: Jettif M. Verdejo Rodriguez, Adrianis P. Clemente Rivera, José G. Betancourt Santiago
To master this competition we must be able to integrate jobs, projects and other diverse activities to evaluate student learning. This should not be limited only to short tests and tests. Because of this, we must also include cooperative/collaborative work. Likewise, design presentations and implement playful activities. This allows us, as teachers, to observe how the student expresses and manifests himself. Which at the same time would be fostering communication prowess and trust between both peers and the teacher. Achieving a more democratic and pleasant atmosphere.
Including various strategies to evaluate learning helps us meet students' needs. That is, in the classroom you will have different types of students with different learning rhythms. There are various forms of evaluation to achieve good learning and among these are; choice tests, questions and answers, true or false, playful activities, group work, presentations, among others. This will allow us to have more options when evaluating. This also gives the student more alternatives when doing the evaluation work. We may be able to offer both the freedom for them to decide how they feel most comfortable and motivated.
For this competition I have several evidence, among these is a reflective diary that I made in one of my classes in grade 10. This was based on the fact that throughout the month the teacher was giving us some ´´Quotes´ 'and in the end we had to reflect s about the one that we most we identify. At this time, it was something that helped a lot, so it is something that I would like to include as a diverse strategy to assess learning and to know the needs of the students. Since it is another alternative that can help to evaluate without them feeling pressured.
Also, this year at the same time that I am taking this course, I am taking the Assessment of Learning. In which I am doing my own planning of an exam for elementary school children. The process has been complicated because there are several factors that must be taken into consideration to make it an effective test, but it is a process that will be facilitated over time.
However, I consider that at the end of the semester I will be able have more command than I have now once I have the teacher's feedback. Besides that when I go to make my practice In Myself latest college year, I will be able put everything learned to the test and self-assess what I should improve, change or modify.
